Choosing Your Air Conditioner

When comparing air conditioners, make sure you account for the room size and your needs.

  • A room 10 sqm up to 25 sqm would need a 2.6kw air conditioner.
  • Rooms between 25 sqm & 35 sqm would need a 3.5kw unit.
  • Rooms between 35 sqm & 60 sqm would need a 5kw–6kw air conditioner.
  • For 60 sqm to 80 sqm spaces, you’d need a unit in the 7kw–8kw range.

You’ll often see the term ‘reverse-cycle’. This applies to air conditioning that cools but also heats. Both ducted and split systems can be reverse-cycle.

Still not sure? Breeze Air can help!

Split System Air Conditioning Unit

Unless it’s a single air con unit perched in a window, or an evaporative cooler (also a single unit), we would be talking about split system air conditioners.

The term ‘split system’ refers to having the intake fan unit outdoors, with the ‘head’ unit—or vents in ducted systems—indoors, blowing filtered, temperature-controlled air.

Ducted air conditioning, while initially a more significant investment, pays off long-term.

This type of air conditioning system, being a split air conditioning system, “breathes in” through the outdoor unit and distributes the resulting “conditioned” air through indoor vents—in as many rooms as you want to have temperature-controlled.

Not only can you have multiple rooms air conditioned simultaneously, you can control them independently.

For example, you could be watching TV in comfort while upstairs, the air con in your bedrooms is set to Standby. Half an hour before you’re ready for bed, you can switch the air on upstairs. Go to sleep with the temperature just how you like it in the bedrooms.

In addition to being designed to save energy with press-button temperature-control only where it’s need at any given time, ducted air conditioning is built to last.

Evaporative air coolers will be easier on your budget, especially in casual use situations.

Evaporative units cool warm air by pumping water from a holding tank to “cooling” pads. A fan then blows the cooler evaporated air into the room. This cool evaporated air has a high moisture content and it means that evaporative units are more effective in less humid situations.

These portable units are generally wheeled to where they’re needed and require an exhaust hose to be slotted into a window opening. Small versions can have outlet buckets underneath to collect the water that passes through the unit.

Air Conditioning FAQ's

You will love having air conditioning because it keeps you comfortable during the heat of the summer. Whether you need a new air conditioner or don’t have one and would like to install one, you probably have some questions. Here at Breeze Air Conditioning, we are the experts and have answers for everything you might be wondering about air conditioning.

We have several types of air conditioners available, including split system and ducted systems.

The size of your home plays the biggest role in what size air conditioner will meet your needs. A larger house won’t be adequately cooled with a small unit and a large unit on a small house can be overkill. Ducted systems will run throughout the house, while split system size will be dependent on the size of the room.

Proper maintenance and service for your air conditioner means it works optimally for as long as possible. Forgoing regular maintenance may forfeit your warranty so it’s important to keep up with it. Most experts recommend having your air conditioner serviced once per year, at least, usually in the spring. However, it’s also important to have the unit serviced anytime you suspect a problem or something isn’t working properly.

Your filter is something that shouldn’t be left to the once a year service call and is a job you can do yourself. How often your filter needs to be changed depends on several factors, including how often you use it. A general rule of thumb is to check your filter once a month. You’ll know it needs to be changed if it’s discoloured or clogged with debris. During the summer months, your filter may need to be changed as often as every two weeks.

This is another common question. Taking good care of your air conditioner is the best way to ensure that it lasts as long as possible. Good maintenance and care can mean up to 20 years of use out of your air conditioner. Newer models are built to last longer so if you have an older unit, you may be able to get more mileage out of a replacement if it’s time for a new one.
